It is never too late to learn how to build better relationships. Students in this day and age are as diverse as their backgrounds, hence a teacher’ s repertoire of skills needs to be as diverse to accommodate. My skills toolbox is expandable, so I am looking forward to learning more skills, tips, strategies. Thank you

Hi yes I would like the tips on class room managment. But the thing that concerns me is that the focus is always on`class managment`, but can do we always blame the teacher for `bad`managment? How can we respond better to behavioural needs? (i.e. those children/young adults that do not know how to behave). So therefore is there two issues here?
Hi Yates,
Two issues? Well, there are many factors which influence classroom behaviour and management but we’ll be focusing on building, maintaining and repairing relationships in this particular series of tips. As part of this we will touch on the issue of students who lack social skills – some students need to be taught ‘how’ to get on with other people or how to behave in certain social interactions.
Yes, yes, PLEASE send me the tips on building relationships with children. Your advice is always fresh and very motivating, so can’t wait!!!

Definitely, tips on relationship building! – On Friday I was asked to by another teacher to watch her Science classroom for a few minutes. It was a group of 7th graders I had helped the sub with (I’m a Math teacher for another group). Everyone was quietly working on their assignment when one of the older students in the back of the room raised his hands. I thought he wanted to ask a question and walked over to his seat, but no, he just wanted to wave “hello, Mrs. X”, happy to see me, “how are you” etc. He got a few other students to look up and stop working.
I informed him that I wasn’t there on a social call, and it wasn’t a party, so to please return to his work and stop talking.
Later I thought if I had done the right thing – got the class back on track – or if I missed an opportunity for relationship building with this particular student (an underachiever who rarely does his assignments but will work one-on-one). – Readers, what do you think?
Thanks, Rob. I’d like to receive the tips and resources.

Yes please, I’d like tips on building relationships with students. That is the reason I subscribed to “Behaviour Needs.” I do not want to be told to buy a book if I need information. I am a veteran teacher who has had serious behavior problems in two specific classes this year. I need to improve my relationships with my students so that I am not left obscene messages written on a variety of surfaces specifically using my name. The oppositional defiant behaviors in two of my classes are so prevalent, that last Wednesday I could not even get through 15 minutes of instruction, so they could work, and I could help them be successful. I cannot continue for four more weeks!
